Spencer's Character

I've gotten a lot of notes from people with information about things that Spencer has done over the years that make them think that he not a person of good character. I have gone back and forth about what to write because some of the stuff I'm getting is more than I would want to post here on this page. There are several things I want to put out there for everyone and if you have more details about these events I'd like to hear about it.

First, people are pretty upset that Spencer hasn't sent out anything on the union elections coming up. In the past people got information in the mail. The members think that he is trying to trick the members into electing himand the board again. So everyone should pay attention to the election and vote leadership that represents us.

Now, about Spencers character. One thing that seems to be pretty common knowledge is that several years ago Spencer was on a call and the situation got elevated. I'm not sure all the details about what happened. Whatever happened Spencer ended up dragging a man across the street by the hair yelling at him to "bark like a dog." Spencer was written up for the whole thing. A year or so ago a reporter pulled the records from his personel file and foud the report. Since then Spencer has had his file purged. I don't know what that reporter plans to do with the information, but I think it goes to the kind of man Spencer is.

The one thing that keeps coming up about Spencer is that he is always preaching about being a good Christian. Some of the people that have written in have said that they think he just uses that so he can do whatever he wants. I know that Spencer used to teach a class at a bible school here locally and that after he taught one class he wasn't welcome back. The word is that he was using the bible to justify everything he wanted to be true and that just wasn't how they did business there.

I decided to put these two things out there because I think they paint the picture of who Spencer is. He is a bully that uses religion to attack people. I have come to think that Spencer believes that he isn't accountable to the members because he is a Christian. I really don't understand it, but I think that most people are tired of it.

  1. PLEA assessed money from each member for five years to donate $100,000 to the National Law Enforcement Officers' Memorial in DC. Members take this off of their taxes every year. I'm betting that if a member called Spencer and the PLEA Board and asked where our last installment to the Memorial is, they would be surprised. The check hasn't been sent. Yes, its been sitting in a fund somewhere and not helping back in DC. Mark at a national meeting, along with Joe Clure, tried to hold the check hostage in order to get what they wanted. Again, not honest and not what I'd want with my Union dues.

  2. Speaking of character, how did Levi, retired, get the sweet deal? He was hired back as a consultant, with a cell phone, only required to show up once per week, to handle Brady issues and contract negotiations. Negotiations was over months ago and, Brady issues have diminished. Members were paying him $800 per month, coincidently, the price of retired health care. Now, Levi Bolton is our lobbyist. What is up? Did anyone run this by the members? Or were Beanies up for debate that month? By the way, Mark is registered as a lobbyist, where has he been at the Capitol? Oh, that's right, he's too busy trying to get rid of Harris. Not how I'd want my Union dues spent.

Is it possible for you to put up the slate of candidates for the PLEA elections on this site? If you dont have the slate of candidates and election dates maybe some of the growing number of readers you are picking up can send you the info. I am totally in the dark on this and do not see it on the PLEA page. Frankly, with all the info you are passing on many members are starting to use this site instead of the PLEA site. You have a real opportunity here to be the homepage for PLEA members if you keep going. Please do. A lot if us are starting to count on you. You have the guys and gals on the street talking. Dont let up.

  4. It's good to see that not all officers agree with what Mark Spencer is doing. His behavior does reflect on all of you, and not in a good way. I know there are a lot of great, ethical officers on the job....it would sure be nice to see them leading your union instead of the goofballs you have now.

  5. The Christian stuff really gets to me. On one hand he is preaching and acting pious and on the other hand he is back stabbing. Doesn't seem very Christan to me. Basically he is a hypocrite.

  6. The membership voted out the last Board, except for one officer because they wanted change and aggressiveness. Now those members can see for themselves where it got them. Spencer and the rest ran a very negative, malicious campaign making promises the could not keep. Everything with them now is divisive and not productive. Spencer told everyone he had tons of relationships with City Hall and the 4th floor. It is obvious these were all lies. Not only did any of the "new" Board have good relationships they have since gotten worse. Worse, to the point where no one will talk to the Executive Board, willingly. The powers-that-be put up with Spencer because in some arenas, they have to. In the arenas they don't, Spencer and PLEA don't get the time of day. I support Harris and think he is doing a good job. I don't think the department is racist nor do I think all management is corrupt. Spencer was obvioulsy told "no" by Harris a while back and he has not gotten over it. There are ways to remove Board members from office. All members need to read a copy of the PLEA bylaws if they truly want to make a change.

  8. As far as the NLEOMF, perhaps someone should ask Jake Jacobsen since he has the whole story. From what I understand, Spencer and Clure were trying to hold our check for ransom unless they got what they wanted. I don't know if it was a NAPO issue as far as getting a position is concerned, or what. Craig Floyd, who heads the NLEOMF would also be a good person to ask. Spencer and Clure have made no bones about the fact that they are not happy with the treatment they receive at national union meetings. None of the major union heads in the country respect them nor do they think they are anything but idiots and unproductive.

As far as the posting reference to putting candidates on this site who are running for the PLEA Board. If you want to run for the Board, you must have at least 5 membership or Board meetings as attended by May. If you meet that criteria, you pick up a petition for the office for which you want to run. You get signatures on your petition and then turn it into Arlene, in the office. An election committee is created and they validate the signatures and declare you eligible to run for office. In May, the campaign statements come out in the Recap. Unless someone at PLEA is willing to let members know who is running, you won't see a list until it comes out in the Recap. I'm sure the Board members will be running unopposed since no one was made aware of the elections this year. A lot of stuff has changed for the worse since the last Board was in the office.

  9. making people bark like dogs, a religious fanatic, wanting sniper rifles? Are you sure Spencer is not from the Mississippi Law Enforcement Association? I can almost hear the banjo.

  10. Several years ago, when the vote came up for or against same sex couples having the same benefits as heterosexual couples in the legislature, Spencer voted against the legal issue. He said he could not ethically vote for something like that. He has also said numerous times that "being gay is a choice", not how you are wired. Regardless of how you feel personally, there are numerous same sex couples who are PLEA members. Apparently, they don't have a voice. But, I guess if you feel you've been racially harmed, you do have a voice.

  11. OK, I admit it, I am a Christian. I must say that from my standpoint Mark is not being obedient to God. He is not being Christ like as God's Word, the Bible asks of him. His actions are an embarrassment and certainly do not glorify the Kingdom of God.

Trust me, I am not judging Mark, that is up to Jesus when Mark is called before Him at the judgement seat of Christ. At that time I believe Mark is going to have some serious explaining to do. If he is a Christian as he proclaims he will get into heaven but I suspect his mansion that God has prepared for him will be about 4' x 4' with outdoor plumbing. Mark, you have been a naughty boy. Go to your prayer closet and get on your knees and pray for forgiveness and please don't come out until your 60 months in DROP had ended. We are getting very tired of you and your antics.
